USDA data shows North Carolina is one of the biggest peanut-farming states in the country. It also is among the country's top five broiler-chicken-producing states. According to 2012 U.S. Census data, there was 50,218 farms located in the state, covering a total of 8 million acres (equivalent to 24 percent of land in the state). Some 66 percent of North Carolina's annual ag-related GDP is from livestock products (including poultry, beef and dairy cattle, sheep or hogs and pigs). The rest comes from crops.
