Saux Head Lake is a 1 mile by 1/2 mile lake surrounded by forests with sparkling clear water that supports Bass, Walleye, Pike, Bluegill. Summer cottages and a few year-round homes are located here. The lake's waters are fed by the Wilson, Sawmill and Birch Creeks that join the Big Garlic, which winds through and out of the lake, into Lake Superior. There are several legends about how Saux Head Lake was named. One that is recounted is that as Chippewa tribes ranged westward along the southern shore of Lake Superior, they entered into skirmishes with the Saux tribes and there was a massacre of a Saux War party by the Ojibways, under Chief Yellow Dogs leadership. Which story is true remains unknown, but the lake became known as Saux Head Lake; the river near Big Bay was named the Yellow Dog. The Lake Superior part of the property has pristine sugar sand beach on a beautiful protected cove created by a rocky granite point of land projecting into Lake Superior called Saux Head Point. Louis G. Kaufman, a Marquette banker who did the architectural planning and helped finance the building of the Empire State Building in New York City, purchased 40,000 acres along this Lake Superior shoreline. His Father, S.R. Kaufman built his over 5,000 Sq. Ft. Log Lodge on the east side of Saux Head Lake. A little further to the east, Louis in 1919 built "the biggest log cabin in the world", his 26,000 square foot lodge called Granot Loma Farm. A favorite camping spot of the Pennsylvania Shiras family was Saux Head Island, now called Garlic Island. George Shiras III, a lawyer, legislator, and naturalist became known worldwide as the first to photograph wildlife at night, and with the endorsement of his friend President Teddy Roosevelt succeeded in passing his famed migratory bird legislation to protect water fowl. The Saux Head Point Owners Association lands, once part of the Granot Loma property , is divided into 17 parcels. Each parcel includes an interest in 640 Acres of forest land which has a mile of Lake Superior frontage, and a common access site with 200 Feet on Saux Head Lake. The California Contemporary Lake Superior beach home has many stylish amenities. The steep gable roof provides high vaulted ceilings over the Living and Dining Areas. An oculus window, (Latin: “eye”), is a structural element in the Conversation Area, and faces "nearly North", providing views of Lake Superior through towering Red and White pine. A raised hearth lined with copper which surrounds a free-standing, vented Wood Stove warms this area.
