The Home (Efficient and Sustainable):This super-insulated 2,083 square foot, timber-frame home was constructed in 2006. Specifically designed to be energy efficient. The 19 thick walls are made of two parallel masonry compressed-earth block walls with a 5 gap in between filled with perlite insulation.Natural light and passive solar. The attached 25x13 greenhouse helps warm the house in winter and provides a wonderful place to view wildlife on those sunny, but seasonably colder days.
The main floor cherry cabinetry was made from trees harvested on the property. The upscale kitchen has both granite and stainless-steel countertops. The in-floor heat gives that constant, quiet, even radiant warmth. An efficient (local limestone) Russian fireplace, with its labyrinth of heated passages warms the living space for long periods of time.
