The history of the county is nearly endless. James City County, Virginia, was established in 1634 by King Charles I as James City Shire. It was one of the first eight counties in Virginia, and is one of only five original shires that still exists today in a similar political form. The county was named after King James I of England, who had been dead for nine years at the time, but whose son Charles I was on the throne.

First settled by the English colonists in 1607 at Jamestown in the Virginia Colony.
