Opened and managed by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, Goose Creek Gameland is a series of waterfowl impoundments, each about 200 acres in size on a peninsula on the south side of the Pamlico River between Aurora and Hobucken in Beaufort and Pamlico counties. The best time to observe waterfowl is from January 20 through February.
Fishing on the Pamlico River is famous for outstanding Red Drum, Speckled Trout, and Striped Bass fishing. South Creek is known to hold Speckled Trout in the deeper holes during the winter months. Speckled Trout are vulnerable to cold-weather extremes and must evacuate shallows when the air temperature drops into the low 40s and below. Water in deeper holes and channels is less impacted by sudden drops in air temperature from winter weather.
