The Shurtz Octagon Barn History: The eight-sided barn was created by George L. Shurtz sometime after he finished construction of the sandstone home in 1882. The Shurtz Octagon barn was built around 1885 to house working teams, one or two buggy horses and the familys milk cows. In the early days, the familys main animals were about 600 head of sheep. Constructed from White Oak timber harvested from the property. Center timbers in the lower part are 55 long and an estimated 75 high from the lower side of the cupola. The upper level was used to store grain as well as hay for the horses and cattle. The custom sandstone built home recently caught fire suffering major damage.
