This four-story commercial building adjacent to the WVU-Tech campus and the Robert C. Byrd Federal Courthouse offers plenty of open-plan space a straight-shot drive from high-traffic I-77.
At the western entrance to Beckleys central commercial district, this well-maintained, four-story brick-and-stone landmark adjoins the campus of the West Virginia Institute of Technology and the Robert C. Byrd U.S. Courthouse and Federal Building, with which it shares a public courtyard.
An estimated 14,500 total square feet of high-capacity, chiefly open-plan space is distributed across its four stories and a finished basement. A freight elevator provides access to all levels. Its glass storefront opens onto Neville Street, one the busiest pedestrian concourses in the downtown.

The first floor has historically operated as a retail space while the upper floors have traditionally been used as storage and as furniture showrooms. The basement level, which formerly included a garage and loading area, has been converted into a whimsical cafe area, which opens onto the rear courtyarda popular space for downtown gatherings.
The broad double-windows on the upper front, rear, and flanking facades allow for plenty of light and air circulation as well as views of the courthouse, courtyard, and historic streetscape. An alley along the flank allows for a third multi-windowed wall not otherwise present in many downtown buildings. Three of the upper floors and the basement floor exceed eight feet in height.
The building has been maintained with diligence since its construction in 1929, and period fixtures and detailed elements remain inside and out, including a vault, elevator, decorative tin ceilings, Italian cut stone foundations, and wooden bay doors off the courtyard at the rear.
In addition to its proximity to the federal courthouse complex, with which it shares the rear courtyard, the building is only a short block from the new Raleigh County Judicial Courthouse and two blocks from the Raleigh County Courthouse. The Beckley-Raleigh County YMCA Complex is a walk of fewer than five minutes from the building, as is the Raleigh County Public Library and the central campus for WVU-Tech. Three banks maintain branch offices in the downtown, as do many county and municipal agencies and law offices.
This is a contributing structure in the Beckley Courthouse Square National Historic District and is therefore eligible for grants and tax credits of 50 and 40 percent for maintenance and rehabilitation. Expenses covered by credits may include architectural and engineering fees, development fees, and other construction-related costs. New heating, plumbing, and electrical systems may be eligible for tax credits, as may be expenses related to updating kitchens and bathrooms, compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and fire-suppression systems and fire escapes. Grants are typically provided to remedy maintenance issues that could lead to damage and may include the repair of the roof, windows, and foundations.
