The farm was originally purchased by Henry Gretencord in the mid 1870’s from Leander Putnam. This farm has helped sustain the Gretencord/Kueser families for over 140 years. In the early 1900’s the Santa Fe Railroad wanted to build a reservoir near Scipio, Kansas to serve as a source of water for its trains. The proposed reservoir was to be located mainly on the Gretencord/Kueser farm. The Gretencord family refused an offer from Santa Fe to buy the land and took Santa Fe to court to gain a restraining order against Santa Fe. The land was later condemned and Santa Fe completed an 80 acre reservoir on the property called Richmond Lake in 1907. Richmond Lake’s water was used by Santa Fe, Richmond schools, and residents of Richmond until the dam burst in 1944. You will have to come see this place for yourself, it has so much to offer. A build site, potential for an incredible lake to be re-built on the property, perfect roadside location for a business / venue, endless options for this incredible piece of history.
