A Seller's Story.....
Let us share with you about our farm ~ our dream house to raise our family.
Took us 9 months to find and the Barn had us sold, before we even got to see the inside of the house, which had just two tire grass ruts to the
garage, so things have changed quite a bit while it has been in our care.
5.1 acres of gently rolling pasture, where you will find geese and red tailed hawks flying over, morning doves and chickadees serenading you
in the morning, humming birds flitting around the trees year round and a chorus of frogs in the evenings while you watch the sun set in the
spring.
In its over 100yr life, this farmhouse has sheltered 3 families, one celebrating their 68th wedding anniversary here, in September we will be celebrating our 30
th wedding anniversary, so if you are looking for a place with good Karma this is it!
The farmhouse, built for ease of use, comfort and durability in mind, using true 2x4s. Yup, no frills. Oh, except for the heated tile floor in the
bathroom Greg installed during a remodel a few years back. Built in the late 1890s, the farmhouse sat approximately 400 yards back from its
current position, was moved by rolling it on logs, pulled by mules in about 1910 to where it is now located.
Yes, an outhouse was out back when we moved in. Once the guesthouse bathroom was up and running the outhouse was decommissioned. You might think with only one bathroom in the house it would be an issue with raising 2 daughters, but it wasn't. We learned to plan and take other peoples needs into consideration, maybe it added to why our daughters are successful in life now, and there wa s always the
guesthouse out back just incase.
Starting upstairs, each year we would take one room at a time and update it. Taking it down to the studs, all the outside walls were converted
to 2x6 and insulated. The interior walls were insulated as well, updated the wiring, 5/8" thick sheetrock, energy efficient duel pane windows, making
quite the difference in keeping the farmhouse warm in the winter or cool in the summer. One upstairs bedroom was converted into an office,
with amazing views. From time to time we discussed turning the attic space upstairs above the bathroom into a second floor bathroom because it was an easy way to install a new bathroom into the house, we just did not feel the need to.
The galley kitchen was updated with a tile back splash, modern sink, new extended counter tops, new copper water lines, updated electrical
and duel pane windows. Both our daughters have developed into quite the cooks in this kitchen. Annette baking goodies for her teachers,
think there may have been a bit of bribery there. Carrie was into making candy, roasts and tacos, whoever got home first made dinner.
Our farmhouse has hosted guests from as far as Kenya and Australia, family gatherings from 2 to 26 in its dining room, Game Nights, Easter
Egg Hunts, Squirt Gun Fights, Girl Scout Halloween Bonfires, BBQs and a wedding of just over 300 guests, we ran out of the rented chairs, it
was a wonderful day of family, friends and Love!
Together with our daughters we planted amazing gardens with berries, corn, tomatoes, sunflowers and more. Chelsea, our lab, beat us to
most of the berries. We raised pheasants, quail and turkeys, one named Strut who lived 21yrs. Housed horses, llamas and a 1951 Aeronca
Champ airplane under reconstruction in the beautiful dairy barn. So many wonderful adventures here on the farm.
The 4 of us used to go for walks down to the creek and around the property with our 2 malamutes, 1 large yellow lab, a llama and several turkeys trailing behind us, wish we had a photo of it.
Gregs Shop has been the sight of many a project, antiques restored, window and barn doors reconstruction to wings of the 51 Champ being
rebuilt, our cars repaired and bookcases created for our daughters bedrooms.
The chicken coup was converted into a guesthouse years back to entice friends and family to visit. Some have come for a weekend others
have stayed for 6 months. And its large shower has worked well for washing off dogs, llamas and a herd of muddy children. It has also doubled well as a Brides dressing room.
Some days you just want to sit and take in the views surrounding our farm. Each season passes with its special splendor; Spring brings flowering trees and shrubs, starting off with white Cherry trees, then pink dogwood and red, white, and purple rhododendrons, peonies, bulbs start early with snowdrops, daffodils, tulips, and then hyacinth.
Summer trees are fully fluffed out and the shade is wonderful, gardens abound with color, slip -n-slide on the side yard, late nights watching
the moon come up while the sun is setting.
Fall, is amazing with the trees tuning into rainbows of color surrounding us, crisp mornings, and stunning sunrises. Making fall garlands from
the leaves is one of our treasured fall pastimes and home dcor.
Winter, love the rain, brings blue skies and lush green all around us. Christmas is always special, with garlands of cedar boughs adorning the
front porch and living room and the tree in front of the mirror. Daily checks to see if Mt Hood or Larch Mtn received snow overnight. The occasional snowfall brings out the child in all of us, sliding and snow angels on the side hill. Once we had 14 inches in 3 days, Greg and the girls
stayed home and built a 9-foot tall snowman!
We started planting trees and shrubs, now more than 100 trees and shrubs growing in every stage of maturity dot the property. A park like
area has developed along the creek due to all the trees. Many have been perfect for propagation providing some nice income.
Its been a good run on the farm, many cherished memories, of our daughters growing up, time spent with family and friends, but its time for us
to go and for a new family to make this farm their own.
We are selling our beloved farm to roam the country in an RV, we can hardly wait!
Greg & Jan Smith
Ps, Every fall, for 30yrs, the Klinski family, coordinated by Naomi Keck, comes back to this farm, to harvest holly for their grandparents, Dolly
& Alvins gravesite and to each have some for their homes. They always call to make sure its convenient for us and the Hollys always need
pruning.
