The Building:The historic building was built 1893 with 14 ft. ceilings on first floor and 12 ft. on the second floor. It first housed C.L. Lynch Hardware. During this time a college was holding classes on the second floor.Hence the 54-foot slate chalkboard on the second floor. At this time, Hico was a booming town, and the city didn't want the college. John Tarleton then moved on to Stephenville and started Tarleton College there in 1899. About Sugar Moon Market: Sugar Moon Antiques purchased this building in April 2006 and began renovations immediately and opened the first floor July 22, 2006. January 2007 completed 2nd floor renovations. Initially, inventory consisted of antiques only. Acquired antiques going to estate sales, antique faires, Round Top/Warrenton antique shows in spring and fall. The proprietor has made a few trips to Brimfield, Massachusetts for the antique shows. She began to have trouble finding one-of-a-kind antiques, so she decided she needed to diversify and carry a few other specialty items. She attended Dallas Markets in early 2008 and purchased a collection(s) of Flax Designs linen women's Spring/Summer inventory. It was very popular and proved to be a hit. While attending Dallas Market, she branched out and chose some gift line items and a few home decor lines. Spring 2009 launched website for Fg Clothing, a women's' linen clothing line. The number of clothing lines and accessories she carries has increased to a great selection that is offered in store and online.

In 2012 she was given the opportunity to travel to the UK on an antique buying tour. What a DREAM come true for the business! She was there for 10 days and went to several antique fairs and shops. The purchased items were shipped back to Texas and it was truly like Christmas when she received the delivery. What a wonderful experience and able to acquire an abundance of true antiques, not some that were going to be in other shops in the area. Since she has many containers delivered to the location two to three times a year. Other ways she has gained her wide customer base is from yearly flea markets held right in the downtown Hico area, which attracted customers from all over. With the closing of shop during the pandemic, it was the ideal time to add product to the website as folks were limited on their local shopping this has increased sales and revenue for the store as well.

She has truly loved this business for the last 15+ years, and it has never really felt like a job! "When you do what you like it is not a job." She has meet and became friends with a lot of wonderful folks. But now she has reached the time and age where she wants to travel more, and this is her desire now, if, and when, it is meant to be.
