The ancient Buckeye Hill Eocene Channel crosses the West Fork of Willard Creek directly west and above this claim.

This ancient river channel in our claim area has a history of gold discoveries and is well known by area prospectors.

The Diamond Mountain Mine is located south of Susanville not far from our claims, being another good sign for the location of our claims.

Lassen County is a very friendly mining county and much easier here to set up small and large prospecting operations.

Official records indicate gold was first discovered at Hayden Hill in 1870. Mining began around the mid-1800s just like the rest of California. 116,000 ounces of gold found were recorded from 1870 onward.

With the Gold Rush of 1849, emigrants followed established trail routes through the area. It was not until 1854 that the area began to take shape, as a trading post was established on the west end of Honey Lake Valley. A gold rush just south of the trading post two years later caused the permanent settlement of Honey Lake Valley and Lassen County.

With an approved BLM Plan of Operation, a building can be built on the land: any building that benefits and improves the claim, though you cannot live on a mining claim.

As stated by the BLM, this can be the "construction of a building, road, fence, or enclosure necessary for mining."

Current usage, is what the BLM calls, Casual Use: panning, shovel, rock hammer, metal detector, creek powered sluice box, where no permission nor permit is needed to camp and prospect.

Now that we have located the claim, you never have to declare to the BLM any gold or gems you find.

You can prospect as little or as much as you like.

On trips to the claim, we gathered in and around the creek, approx. 1/4 of an ounce of gold on each half, being worth about $300. As the BLM does not specify the amount of gold to be found to locate a claim other than gold needs to be discovered, we use this amount for a 40 acre claim as a projection of good gold potential. Someone with more time may find more. Gold prices are over $1200/ounce. Though we could never guarantee what you will find, we did locate this claim in an historically rich area for gold prospecting.

You are allowed to post No Trespassing for Prospecting signs in and around the claim.

A transfer of ownership is a sale of legal, exclusive ownership of a mining claim site. To be a legally recorded claim, gold had to be found on the claim, which was completed by us, as we are original claim locators.

Your ownership is legally conveyed via a Quit Claim deed, and legally recorded with the BLM and Lassen County. A Quit Claim deed is the required legal document per the BLM. Each year, on or before September 1st, you need to file a simple form with the Bureau of Land Management, along with $330, or can be paid online. By doing this, you keep the claim forever. Two names or more on your deed. You must be a current US citizen with a US address to own a mining claim in the US. I have paid the $330 fee for this year, not due again until September 1, 2020. Lassen County taxes = $50/year, due again in Summer 2020.

Your 40 acres is the NW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Section 13, Township 29 North, Range 10 East, Mount Diablo Base Line and Meridian, known as the Willard Creek Gold #2 mining claim, in the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Mountains.

Easiest route is from Susanville, about 10 miles west to claim.

Take CA-36 west out of Susanville, turning left/south on Willard Creek Road in 8.7 miles,

which is also National Forest road 29N03.

CA-36 is also known as the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway.

The claim location monument has a 4 foot wooden post with an attached copy of the Location Notice, as required by the State of California.

Willard Creek running through the claim is a unique advantage for gold prospecting and prospectors always look for creek bends as on this claim for where the gold accumulates.

Gold always occurs in gravels in the metallic state and when so found has various physical characteristics. Gold is dense and heavy, it has a characteristic metallic color, and it is soft and easily malleable (it is easily formed by hammering). These are the characteristics used by prospectors to identify gold in the field.

Placer gold occurs on the claim as small grains derived from gossan formed by weathering, and oxidation of the gold, copper and iron rich veins. Gold also occurs as grains flakes and small nuggets derived from the erosion of mineralized fault zones on, and upstream from the claim.
