The largest nugget unearthed from this area and possibly all of Colorado, was discovered just north of our claim. It weighs an exceptional 9.3 pounds and is referred to as Toms Baby. This Nugget is the centerpiece of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science Mineral Collection, and can still be viewed and enjoyed today at the museum.

Camp on your claim, or the nearby secluded campground, Michigan Creek Campground, which has restrooms, picnic tables, and fire pits, though no running water, and is right along Michigan Creek. Camp to the sounds of rushing creek water and catch your dinner, as Michigan Creek is known for its trout fishing.

The discovery of gold in 1859 brought thousands of prospectors to this exact area.

This is a 20 acre unpatented, gold mining placer claim, the South half of Michigan Creek Gold #4, with Michigan Creek running thru the claim and is in Park County, Colorado, in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, and the Pike National Forest. The claim is legally registered with the Bureau of Land Management out of Lakewood, CO. You own the mineral rights, not sharing with others, on the 20 acres, and use your 20 acres recreationally for camping and prospecting in an awesome, beautiful area. This claim is also a short hike to the Upper Michigan Reservoir.

Road access all the way to the claim.

With an approved BLM Plan of Operation, a building could be built on the land: any building that benefits and improves the claim, though you cannot permanently live on a mining claim. Current usage, is what the BLM calls, Casual Use: panning, shovel, rock hammer, metal detector, creek powered sluice box.

You can prospect as little or as much as you like.

Now that we have located the claim, you never have to declare to the BLM any gold or gems you find.

Over a weekend, I gathered in and around the creek, approx. 1/8 of an ounce of gold on each half of the claim, being worth about $300. As the BLM does not specify the amount of gold to be found to locate a claim other than gold needs to be discovered, we use this amount for a 40 acre claim as a projection of good gold potential. Someone with more time may find more. Gold prices are over $1200/ounce. Though we could never guarantee what you will find, we did locate this claim in an historically rich area for gold prospecting.

A transfer of ownership is a sale of legal, exclusive ownership of a mining claim site. To be a legally recorded claim, gold had to be found on the claim, which was completed by me, as I am the original claim locator.

Your ownership is legally conveyed via a Quit Claim deed, and legally recorded with the BLM and Park County. A Quit Claim deed is the required legal document per the BLM. Each year, on or before September 1st, you need to file a simple form with the Bureau of Land Management, along with $155 By doing this, you keep the claim forever. 1 or more names on your deed. You must be a current US citizen with a US address to own a mining claim in the US.

I have paid the fee for this year, not due again until September 1, 2018.

From Denver, about 2 hours, US 6 West, to US 285 south, to right onto County Road 35, to County Road 54, which is the claim road, also known as Michigan Creek Road.

From Fairplay, take US highway 285 North to small town of Jefferson. Take a left on County Road 35, then onto Michigan Creek Road 54, which is about 19 miles from Fairplay.

Then using claim GPS coordinates as listed below about 9 miles to claim from 285/35 junction.

The claim location monument has a 4 foot wooden post, and copy of Location Notice, as required by the State of Colorado.

Gold always occurs in gravels in the metallic state and when so found has various physical characteristics. Gold is dense and heavy, it has a characteristic metallic color, and it is soft and easily malleable (it is easily formed by hammering). These are the characteristics used by prospectors to identify gold in the field.

Placer gold occurs on the claim as small grains derived from gossan formed by weathering, and oxidation of the gold, copper and iron rich veins. Gold also occurs as grains flakes and small nuggets derived from the erosion of mineralized fault zones on, and upstream from the claim.
