Custer County experiences a continental climate typical of much of the Intermountain West region of the United States with cold winters and hot summers, low precipitation, and a high number of sunny days. Annual snowfall can vary but tends to be moderate, especially in the higher elevations.

History

Eastern Idaho was settled primarily in the 1880’s and 1890’s mostly by Mormon Pioneers. The areas first settled were along the Bear River and Snake River and then up the tributaries. Irrigation was originally developed with river and creek water close to the sources. Reservoirs were built on the Snake River to provide storage water and large canal systems were developed. When wells became feasible, the irrigation development continued in the desert areas away from the river. Today, there are many commercial farm units with canal water or wells providing an inexpensive source of water.
