Upper Michigan 113+/- Acre Recreational Property for Sale! This property is located in Greenland Township in east-central Ontonagon County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is located just a mile SE of Mass City, on Depot Road. This area is filled with history!! Mining began in the area after an escaped slave discovered copper on a bluff above the Flintsteel River. Between 1850 and the 1860s, over a half-dozen mines were opened on the bluff or nearby. Adventure Mountain marks the north end of the district. It rises above the Mass mine and looms over the unincorporated village. During the late 1800s Mass City became a copper boom town, with the population nearing a thousand residents by 1905. The Adventure operated from 1850 until 1920. The mine produced approximately 11 million pounds of refined copper. The mine is currently open as a summer tourist attraction - Numerous mine openings, foundations, prospecting pits, and other artifacts can be seen at this site, which is the best-preserved copper mining location in the area. Several different tours are offered today, including a historic surface tour and three underground options. Tours range from easy walks to several hour excursions that involve using rope and harness to explore lower levels of the mine. This area is a Rock Hounds paradise - several mine sites include crumbling foundations and rock piles to explore. Those who seek hiking and biking trails will also find them at Adventure Mountain! Mass City’s railroad station was a short distance to the south at Mass Station, which was near McKeever Junction, the junction of the Copper Range; Mineral Range; and Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul railroads. This railway runs along the eastern edge of the property being offered for sale, and is currently part of Trail No. 3, a MI-TRALE groomed snowmobile trail system. The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, still in use, crosses east to west about a quarter mile south of the property. Thousands of feet of the Adventure Creek, which gets its name from the nearby mine, branches through the property from north to south. This creek is a tributary of the East Branch of the Ontonagon River. A 12 mile stretch of the East Branch has been designated as a Michigan Blue Ribbon Trout Stream. Along with its four branches and tributaries, the Ontonagon River offers a wide diversity of opportunities for wading, canoeing, shoreline, and even boat angling. Much of the flow is through wild, scenic country, and portions of the river have been designated as a National Wild and Scenic River. Several beautiful waterfalls, including Agate Falls and Bond Falls, and whitewater rapids appear along its journey to the shore of Lake Superior. The thinned forest, pond and creek on this property provide habitat for Whitetail deer and upland game birds, and just to the north east is walk-in access into thousands of acres of Corporate CFA Lands for even more opportunity for hunting, trapping, and fishing. The property has year round access on a paved road, where electric power is available. There's so much to see and do in every direction in the area! Schedule your private tour soon! .... The historic photographs of the Adventure Mine were provided by miningartifacts.org - a wonderful site dedicated to mining artifacts and history. MLS# 1090346
