HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
Built in 1850, the Lockhart Plantation was once a 1000-acre farm ran by 75 slaves in the thriving aristocratic and cultural center of Chappell Hill. The farm had its own blacksmith shop, cotton gin, store and other facilities. The plantation was owned by Dr. John Lockhart and was frequented by Sam Houston himself when he came to Chappell Hill for both business and pleasure.
