Lake Amistad (Rough Canyon Marina 30 minutes from Loma Alta Ranch)
67,000 acres of water along 540 miles of U.S. shoreline - this is Lake Amistad, one of the largest, clearest lakes in Texas! Lake Amistad is considered by many to be Del Rio's biggest draw, offering acres of blue glass on the Texas/Mexico border. The lake is part of Amistad Recreation Area, managed by the National Park Service. It is fed by the Pecos, Rio Grande, and Devil's River; limestone deposits and solid earth lend the water an extraordinary clarity and deep turquoise quality.
Amistad Recreation Area attracts people internationally not just for boating and house boating, but also camping, water-skiing and wakeboarding, nature hikes, and especially fishing. The lake holds several variations of bass, catfish, sunfish, and gar, not to mention various other fish species. Lake Amistad is known as one of the best bass lakes in the country; with warm weather nine months out of the year, Amistad can be fished when other lakes have little to offer. Many of the best examples of prehistoric Native American petroglyphs in North America are local, with a few, such as the Parida and Panther caves, accessible by boat.
Devils River State Natural Area and Dolan Springs Preserve (15 miles from ranch, end of Dolan Creek Rd.)
Devils River State Natural Area: Consisting of almost 20,000 acres, the site posses good biological diversity and the scenic river corridor offers a rugged river experience. Archaeological evidence suggests that cultural influences from the west and the east met at Devils River. Access to the river is by hiking, biking, or park tour only. No vehicle access permitted. The park is a put-in point for canoes. Open by reservation only. Bring all necessary food, water, gas and other supplies. Admission fee.
Dolan Springs Preserve: The preserve is open to the public for scheduled field trips and volunteer workdays.
The Devils River flows through the preserve's canyons, which support stands of oaks and sycamore bounded by steep cliffs dotted with scrub juniper and mesquite. Rare and endangered species such as the Texas snowbell and Mexican white oak are found on the preserve.
Ciudad Acua (45 minutes from Loma Alta Ranch)
Del Rio's sister city, directly across the Mexico - U. S. border, is the best border city in Mexico. Unique merchandise, wonderful food and a welcoming atmosphere await you.
