This is an historic home in pristine condition. The home was built in 1882 by agricultural entrepreneur and innovator William M. Girardeau, Monticello's "Watermelon King". Girardeau began planting watermelons the same year he built the house. Many local farmers followed his lead. To expand markets, he invented a machine to separate and clean seeds from the melons left in the fields. This invention made Jefferson County the "Watermelon Seed Capital of the World" for many years.
