Utah's Scenic Highway 89 carries you through Southern Utah's National Parks and National Monuments amidst the heart of Utah's "Color County" (The color comes from the abundant vegetation and the varied shades of red in the Utah sandstone). The East Fork of the Virgin River runs along Scenic Byway 89 and south of Long Valley Junction and The Sevier River runs north of the Junction. The Virgin River is the river that is famous for carving the great Zion Canyon and although looks harmless it can become powerful when it floods. Long Valley Junction is the junction to Highway 14 to Cedar Mountain and Highway 89 leading north to Bryce.
The Sevier River has its headwaters in the Markagunt and Paunsaugunt Plateaus of south-central Utah and flows generally northward to Sevier Bridge Reservoir, where it begins a sweeping turn to the northwest and then southwest into the Sevier Desert where it terminates in Sevier Lake. The river is 225 miles long. The East Fork Sevier River, the San Pitch River, and Otter Creek are the major tributaries to the Sevier River.
