A big buck sanctuary located at the end of a dead-end road with connections to a huge wildlife area! Down the long asphalt road leads you to a gated entry point along the east property line of this large rectangular block of timber. The northern half is planted with very desirable hardwood species for future potential harvests. The growth rate on these trees is impressive with many of the oaks and walnuts already in the 8-10” diameter range. Within the tree planting area, as there is still sunlight reaching the ground, there is great understory growth of grasses, forbs, and weeds providing great bedding and forage habitat for the deer. As I walked this area deer beds were everywhere along with countless well-worn trails and rubs everywhere from the previous rut. The species include walnut, red oak, white oak, chinquapin oak, and burr oak. The southern portion is traditional sandy soil river-bottoms with a couple drainage ditches running through feeding into the river. There is a significant amount of marketable timber here comprised of some very nice walnut trees. The Mississinewa River winds through the southern third of the property with the southern boundary line across the river. The neighboring property to the south and much of the west is the Randolph County Wildlife Management Area, a 400 plus acre area managed for wildlife. There has also been trout stocking in the river just west of the property to add some interest to your fishing. Just beyond the wildlife management area is yet another large block of private timber known as the McVey Memorial Forest, a 249-acre forest which contains the Cherry Grove Cemetery. Here are located historical gravesites from the 19th century. This area is not open to hunting, so a default sanctuary for the local deer herd to also inhabit. All this adds up to the potential for older age bucks to be plentiful and increased odds of success on top-end deer. Wild turkeys are found here too, in fact, the day I took pictures of the property a hen crossed the road coming out of this section of timber. Spring turkey hunting, morel mushrooms, great deer hunting, and fishing in the river, all these are possible on this remarkable tract of timber with easy yet private access. Please call to arrange your own private showing. Shown by appointment only.
