The Rutherford Johnson Mansion is one of central Alabamas distinctive historic plantations from the pre Civil War cotton planters era. The original structure was completed in the 1840s by Frank Johnson, one of the first steamboat captains on the Alabama River. In 1897, a descendant made substantial alterations and expansions that brought the structure to its current basic layout. The house was restored and renovated in the 1980s by another descendant, Mary Johnson, who briefly operated a bed & breakfast and event facility. In 2004, the present owner, Clark McKinley, restored the house to its present appearance.
There are many extras such as 12 ft. ceilings, wide entry hall, unique hardwood flooring, expansive verandas and porches, several of the original outbuildings, a 40kw generator, a 4 stall horse barn, fenced in areas, and a 16X32 swimming pool, all on 7.4 acres.
