The area also hosts a large and thriving herd of Rocky Mountain Elk and Red Stag. It is not commonly known outside the immediate area that these elk are present but within Stonewall and King counties these animals are growing in number and popularity. There is no designated elk/stag season in Texas so these animals would be available to harvest year round. However, most of the local land owners have made it a point to promote the preservation of this herd and few have been harvested.
