Location: This Desolation Unit property is located approximately 24 miles NE of Long Creek, Or. on Highway 395. You go 19 miles north of Long Creek on 395 and turn right on Trout Creek Road. The property is 5.5 miles east on Trout Creek Road.
Acreage: 520 acres in two tax lots
Wildlife: This property is eligible for 2 buck tags and 2 bull tags. Elk, deer, and turkeys are common when looking at this piece. USFS borders part of this for 1 miles. This gives great access to hundreds of miles of public ground to the north. There are old fields adjacent to the old homestead which could be put into alfalfa which would be a tremendous draw to all wildlife in the area. It would be the only alfalfa for miles around. I dont think I have ever been on the ranch that I havent seen deer. I have seen elk numerous times also.

Water: Many springs are located on the ranch. Two have been turned into small ponds. Also two are at the old and new cabin and they are excellent.
Improvements: There is an old homestead on the property that looks out to the Middle Fork of the John Day River towards the south. Some of the buildings are still standing and it is quite a piece of history. The newer cabin is not quite finished as yet but there is electricity to it and it is in cell range. It is very nice.
General Observations: This is in the heart of very good hunting and very good people. The timber is nice and there are meadow areas that were taken from the timber that was done by the old homesteaders. In the middle of the property as shown by the map a large ranch owns 120 acres. They have thousands of acres and they only use the 120 in March when they bring cows through. I have know 3 owners of this piece since I have been here 40 years and all of them have the highest regard for the ranchers. The owners have worked out a system to use the 120 with a very good relationship with the rancher. The road that accesses the ranch is not plowed the entire way to the ranch. If there is a lot of snow during the winter months then about a mile would need to be plowed to the cabin or a snow machine used. The views are stunning looking south to the river and since it is a south slope it warms up earlier in the year. Very good steelhead fishing is found close by on the John Day River.both the North Fork and the Middle Fork. This place is secluded but not so much as to take forever to get to it.
