Location: This property is in the shadows of Black Butte in Fergus County, Montana. Elk winter in this area east of the Judith Mountains. They graze on CRP stands and open prairie especially if the mountains receive heavy snowfall. Access to the property from the Bowser County Road is through a neighbor and BLM. Property Size: The department of revenue indicates the ranch contains 520 + deeded acres. There are 250.6 acres in CRP with annual payments until 2011 of $7,300. The balance of the ranch is native pasture. There is a good reservoir towards the middle of the property. Also, bordering the deeded lands on the east side is a 160 acres of private lease with a 89.9 acre grain allotment with FSA.

Quotes from Lewistown BLM Field Office: Winter surveys conducted by the North Wind Environmental 2002, Wildlife Report, show a total of 457 elk were observed, of which 123 were bulls. The vast majority of the elk, 291 were concentrated around the Black Butte.
