Austins first map of the new Republic of Texas. The ghost town of Powell Dale, from which the mesas take their namenow sunk beneath the waters of Lake Whitneyat one time had a post office, a school, and several businesses that included a cotton gin and a flour mill. The nearby hamlet of Kopperl and the surrounding area is the subject of Texas poet laureate Steve Fromholzs Texas Trilogy, record by Lyle Lovett, and the subsequent photo book, Texas Trilogy: Life in a Small Texas Town, by Craig Hills and Bruce Jordan.
