This historic building, known locally as the Rennick House was built about 1855-1860. It is an excellent example of the style known as Gothic Revival, popular in America at the middle of the 19th century.
The house had been abandoned and sat idle and deteriorated for over 40 years when it was purchased in 1994 by the Lead Region Historic Trust. This organization has been active in preserving and restoring early buildings in southwest Wisconsin for almost 20 years.
This house was restored by the Trust from 1998-2000. The focus of the restoration was to preserve as much of the original building materials as possible: and to adapt some interior features to modern living, making the restored building energy efficient and convenient in which to live.

The result of the restoration of the Rennick House is an authentic example of American historic architecture, but not in any museum sense. The interior features 3 bedrooms (including a very large master bedroom); 2 full baths (the first floor bath finished in ceramic tile & molded concrete) and a very convenient & workable modern kitchen. There is also a first floor laundry room and a large double parlor/living room. A large dining room is the central room of the first floor. All inerior woodwork is original to the building, including the built-in china cupboard in the dining room. About 60% of the house is of limestone construction and the remaining 40% is wood frame. Both sections of the house were constructed at the same time.
The house is situated on a rural road on a 4 acre parcel; has a seasonal stream east of the house; and is protected from the west and northwest by being banked into a small hillside rise in the lot. Parts of the lot are mowed grass; other areas are natural, especially near the stream and to the north of the house.
Although rural, it is near Shullsburg (2 1/2 mi.); Dubuque, IA. (28 mi.); Galena, IL (19 mi.); & Monroe, Wis. (30 mi.)
