Alamosa, Colorado, a town of roughly 11,000 is conveniently located about 50 miles to the northwest. Alamosa, Colorado has a University, Adams State, and two Junior Colleges. Besides these amenities Alamosa also has Kroger, Super Walmart, and Safeway grocers. Alamosa serves as the banking and commerce center for the San Luis Valley. You can find most what you may need there along with chain and privately run restaurants, and a small general aviation airport with charter service to Colorado Springs and Denver international airports.

When the Conquistadors followed the Rio Grande River north out of Mexico into this picturesque valley, they found a land of sunshine, snowcapped 14,000-foot mountain peaks and open bright azure blue skies clean air, pure water, and plenty of room to breathe. These adventurously intrepid travelers where the first Western Europeans to come into this valley in the mid 1500's and immediately claimed it for Spain.

Here on the Wild Horse Mesa, as well as within the boundaries of much of the southern valley, we still see the remnants of those early visiting claimants. Look just over there!!! What's that? A herd of wild horses!! They still roam wild and free as they have for well over 400 years now. These remnants of that bygone era are the direct descendants of the Spanish Mustangs that escaped their servitude to the explorers from those expeditions into the great unknown north. Perhaps you have deep within you a similar adventurous spirit, and a need to wander a bit?
