HISTORY:
McCarty was the name of a gang back in the days of the Old West. The last robbery they participated in was to steal a fortune of gold. Between the robbery near Haines and being caught near a local reservoir, the gang hid the gold. Legend has it the gold has yet to be found. It is legend that this property lies somewhere between where the robbery occurred and the reservoir near the famous McCarty gang hideout.
PRODUCTION:
The property currently raises Alfalfa hay. 50+/- acres is an old stand and a new alfalfa planting is irrigated by the pivot.
IRRIGATION:
There are about 180+/- acres being irrigated. Water is from the Powder River. It is conveyed and delivered by mainline to two wheel-lines and to the pivot. There are also some hand-lines. There are about 180+/- acres being irrigated. Water is from the Powder River. It is conveyed and delivered by mainline to two wheel-lines and to the pivot. There are also some hand-lines. The older stand produced about 3 to 4 tons last year. This year, for the new stand, the owner anticipates that the land will produce about 5 tons to the acre. About 164+/- acres has water rights dating back to 1885. The balance of the water rights date back to 1966 according to the owner. The pivot is an older Pringe pivot. It was switched over to low pressure in 2003 so newer heads and wiring were updated at the time. The water from the river is placed into an unnamed ditch. The owner pays 25% of the maintenance for the ditch, many years the cost has been nothing or nearly nothing. The most this amount has ever been is $500. The pump for the irrigation water ran at about $3,700 last year.
CRP:
Some of the property is in CRP and has a government grain base. There are 125+/- acres of wheat base. There are 57+/- acres of barely base. Payments to the land owner are around $5,000 a year. The land owner is paid as long as no vegetables are raised. It is unknown how long the program will last as it could change when the farm bill changes.
