The Clay Brokers of Kentucky were sons of Capt. Thomas Clay of the Revolutionary War. Capt. Clay's cousin, Henry Clay, gave Thomas a patent of land in Kentucky for his war service. Nestor, a surveyor for the Mexican Government received part of his Texas lands as a Mexican Land Grant, and in 1835, owned 25,000 acres in the state. Nestor was killed by Indians and he and his wife are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in Austin, Texas. Tacitus received his land grant from Stephen F. Austin. He and Nestor shared in building "Clay Castle" a 4-story home on the land. Tacitus's son, Thomas, owned approx. 20,000 acres in 1890 and some 1,130 acres of the the two brother's land are now owned by Thomas C. Clay, great-grandson and great-grandnephew of the founders. Clay today raises hay, grazing land, and beef cattle, as well as running a dairy operation. The land was originally used primarily as a cotton plantation, with fruits and corn also raised.
