There was an arrangement for Dr. Isaac Robinson Godwin, Nannie's brother, to care for the Williams until their death, at which time he became the owner. Dr. Godwin (called Rob by family and friends) and his wife, Emma, had four children: Claiborne, Robert Nelson, Mary Edmondson (later called Miss Ma1y Ed) and Nancy St. John (later Nan Reid).
Dr. Godwin was educated at Washington College (W&L), Jefferson Medical School, and Virginia Medical College in Richmond. He was a Civil War hero, including serving four months as a prisoner of war. Dear Nannie.....yours devotedly, Charlie, contains Nannie's letter that documents the day he unexpectedly returned home to Fincastle. He was a much loved and well respected physician in Fincastle and was an
attending physician for Charlie's brother, James H. H. (Captain Jim), during his terminal illness. Dr. Godwin authored the story, Fincastle Fire, which was printed on May 7, 1903, 33 years after the fire of 1870.
Robert Kyle Godwin, Rob's brother; eventually came to live in this home with Dr. Godwin and his family. Robert left Fincastle, went to Lexington to work in the bank and lived with Charlie and Nannie. Sometime after he began working at the Bank of Lexington, he realized Charlie, a much trusted bank officer, was keeping two sets of books. After Charlie's disappearance Robert was arrested, tried and jailed for almost 3 years before being pardoned by the Governor of Virginia. Robert returned to Fincastle. Robert's estate was willed to his brother's two daughters Miss Mary Ed and Nan.
Records of the United Daughters of the Confederacy show that Mrs. I. R. Godwin and daughter, Nan, were charter members of the Fincastle Chapter, No. 797. This chapter endorsed Dr. I. R. Godwin (April 13, 1907) and Robe11Kyle Godwin (Nov. 4, 1907) for the Southern Cross of Honor because of their roles in the Civil War. Mary Ed Godwin became a member of this chapter on Nov. 16, 1907.
