This property consists of 1726.36 acres situated in Harney County Or. It is within a few miles of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge where hundreds of thousands of wildfowl make their home. This was a hay/grain/cattle ranch for years. It was then put into the Wetland Reserve Program in conjunction with Ducks Unlimited. They have spent an unbelievable amount of money in putting in canals, weir boxes, dikes, nesting areas, and sanctuaries for the waterfowl and upland birds that nest here. This has paid off resulting in large amounts of both types of birds nesting and feeding here. I have hunted here and it is truly fantastic with large areas for many hunters to be here at one time hunting. The land is flat with mountains and hills surrounding it. You can see the birds coming from a great distance and it is extremely gratifying to call and watch them come in from so great a distance. Th...

You can see the birds coming from a great distance and it is extremely gratifying to call and watch them come in from so great a distance. The Silvies River supplies water to it. The WRP continues to work with the landowner and give direction to new developments as they come up. Some cattle grazing is allowed depending on the weather conditions and the amount of water coming in. You can hunt this ranch, sell it, work on it but you will be in contact with the WRP to deal with grazing, haying or altering what they or DU has done.
There is a double wide trailer there that relatives of the owner live in. Three large old granaries, shop, and corrals are also close to the house.
This is located in Southeastern Oregon in Harney County where agriculture is predominant and there arent many people. The culture is old west with a mindset of integrity and tradition of 80 years ago. Needless to say, it is conservative and very friendly. Your neighbors look out for you and you look out for them. Simple.
It is very interesting how many birds there are and how many species you can see. Sometimes the fields are perfectly white with snow geese. Other times you can see wave after wave of Canadas coming into you not to mention the ducks coming back and forth.
This property lies to the north of the other Waterfowl Property that we have on our site. They both were worked on at the same time by WRP and DU to use the available water for the maximum amount of benefit to each ranch. Both ranches comprise 2,830 acres that make one block. The 1104 acre ranch sells for $1,660,000.
Price for 1726.36 acres: $2,495,000
Taxes: $2,058.59
The following is a write up by the owner of the property.
Our Grandpa and Great uncle bought this property about 1944. At that time is was used as haying and grazing. They put in ditches and dikes and then planted barley and occasionally flax. They worked day and night to move the dirt and make the dikes. There were headgates to build, and all had to be planned to work with the yearly flow of the river. The three wooden granaries are a testimony of the grain that was raised during that time.
Our father took over the operation after the death of our Grandfather and continued to run cattle and raise grain. My brother and I grew up on this property. We both spent many hours riding horses, working cattle and helping raise grain and hay. We enjoyed the numerous varieties of wildlife on the property. After the sudden death of our parents my brother and I inherited this property. It has all been put into the Wetland Reserve Program except for the yard site. The WRP and Ducks Unlimited have partnered together to make this property a place for wildlife putting money into dikes, ditches, water control structures and much more.
I remember stories our Dad told of how the numbers of geese were so many that to keep the geese off the grain they would chase them back to the refuge with a plane. It got to the place where all they had to do was start the plane up and the birds could be seen flying back to the refuge.
Two great horned owls have nested on this property in the old grainery for over 20 years. We have many pictures of them sitting in the shop or with their babies on the grainerys. My Aunt and Uncle have lived on the property the last few years and have enjoyed seeing a doe raise twin fawns near the house. Feeding the pheasants and enjoying the variety of ducks, geese and wildlife from their window.
