On August 31st, 1886 Mr. Charles Cole, a Williamstown banker, wed Mary Adeline Mole, daughter of Thomas Mole.
On February 19th of 1889, Joseph White sold one and a half acres on Depot Street, now Cole Avenue, to Thomas Mole for $1,500. (Deed Book 190 on Page 373). The 1890 Williamstown tax records show a bill dating to May for a new home together with barn and harness shop belonging to Thomas Mole, valued at $3,650. Not until 1906 did the town records show the home to be in the name of Charles Cole. (Perhaps parents were just as protective of their daughters and cautious and skeptical in those days of their son-in-laws).

The Mole-Cole home remained in the family until 1966. From that time to the present, the home has passed through five different owners. In 2004, the Chapmans began the total restoration of the home that both preserved the original character and detail while adding modern comforts such as radiant heat, central air conditioning, all new wiring and plumbing but more significantly, the glorious kitchen and gracious new baths. Today, the home is a showplace and has been included on tours of the towns historic homes.
Perhaps what captures the eye first when approaching the Stick Style Queen Ann Victorian Painted Lady is the unique gazebo porch attached off the north east corner of the house where one imagines the family relaxing on warm summer days. Another unusual feature of this house is the original Porte Cochere. These were certainly somewhat common in the past but few have lasted through the years. This one did and still serves a practical purpose too, in protecting one from the elements and does so far more attractively than todays attached garages.
The exterior of this handsome home is full of adornments common to the era such as the stick style veranda, turned posts, shingled gables, carved trim, frieze under the eaves and of course the multi-colored exterior paint scheme.
Inside one is entranced by all of the stunning restoration work done so painstakingly by Mr. Chapman. The oak floors gleam, every piece of interior wood trim was removed for cleaning and refinishing, original light fixtures were restored, fireplaces rebuilt, bathrooms totally updated. In fact the entire interior of the house was taken to the wood frame so all services could be replaced including all new wiring and plumbing, then insulation added, new finished interior surfaces and all trim then replaced.
Mr. Chapman deserves enormous praise for protecting, preserving and enhancing this landmark home with attention to quality and detail while Mrs. Chapman gets her own share of kudos for her splendid choices of colors throughout the home, the magnificent furnishings and window treatments all of which lend an air of richness and comfort so inviting and harmonious.
This treasure is now seeking new owners who will love the home as much as it has ever been loved and who will fill it with happy sounds and memorable occasions.
