Land Price Affects? China increasing imports of wood products

In a recent report, Wood Resources International LLC, reports that China is importing more logs and wood products than last year.  The growth of the Chinese economy is fueling internal demand for raw materials.  The Chinese have increased purchases from Russia, Canada and Brazil.  Though the US is not mentioned specifically, increases in Chinese demand for wood products should indicate increased demand for US wood products.  A growing China is often cited as a reason for commodities run-ups nowadays.

In our opinion, a falling US Dollar (which the current administration seems keen on allowing) should encourage US exports by making US goods less expensive overseas; see our note below regarding milk. Is this good for US as a whole? Uh, we're not going to discuss that here and generate lots of love/hate mail.

The US Administration on the falling US Dollar

Cash for dairy farmers, milk for (Chinese?) kids

If you watch the news, you'd probably be surprised that our government functions at all, but it does.  Congress passed and the President recently signed an agriculture appropriations bill that included an amendment to provide $60 million in price supports and $290 million in direct aid to dairy farmers.

This is all well and good because America needs a functioning farm industry and small farms are important not just because we don't want everything to be grown by larger conglomerates, but because if we let the farms disappear when prices are low, they won't be around when prices rise. And if only for food security reasons, we don't want to be importing our milk from China. At least I don't want the Chinese food inspection service, or whatever the Chinese use for inspections, to be in charge of what I put on my Cheerios.  Heck, I wouldn't let my dog drink Chinese milk, if I had a dog. Of course, I may be doing just that (putting Chinese milk on my Cheerios) since we often don't know where our food comes from, but that's another story entirely.

The US dollar is low and the price of milk is low. That means that we should be promoting the export of milk. Chinese kids need milk too.

Land Barons in the U.S.A. and Around the World

Well, if you needed any further reason to sell everything, max out your credit cards and start learning Chinese and Hindi and start buying land, the article in the India Times on global land barons should do the trick.  We know you already can't sleep at night and we want to make sure your insomnia sticks around while you ponder a future for your children eating rice grown in Asia from an Indian company owned by a country-less hedge fund manager/secret cabal controlling all things (just kidding on that, no offense to folks who aren't this cynical).

Anyway, it's actually quite interesting to read about folks who are essentially homesteaders in the third world, building land-based businesses wherever arable land exists.  In case you thought only gurus from other countries think this way, we have our own land barons here in the States and there's a good article below about Shonda Warner and her farm-investment fund.

As a young forestry analyst a decade ago, the LandAndFarm.com founder spent quite a bit of time traveling the world, finding the latest and greatest timberland investments.  Whatever happened to the vast tracts of planted mahogany in Fiji?  (They are still relatively unexploited.)

Our links below do not imply in any way any support for the information the articles contain. And the veracity of the articles should also be considered a reader beware issue.
