Big changes are in store that we think will benefit everyone. Beginning October 1, every one of our customers with a Standard listing is getting a free upgrade to 25 pictures online. the increased picture-count is part of our new pricing plan, called Enhanced, and includes the same free 60-word classified ad in our leading magazine, Land And Farm Bulletin.
The Enhanced plan is normally $29.95 per month, but you'll get it it at the Standard price of $19.95 until January 1, 2009. Before and up to that date, you can either go online and opt to continue with the Enhanced plan, or we'll return you to Standard pricing, at no charge, automatically; Standard pricing comes with the same 16 pictures you've always had, but without a classified ad in Land and Farm Bulletin. If you do nothing at all, your listings will move back to the Standard plan on January 1.
We want to provide you with the maximum number of online photos possible. We also are still fully committed to the magazine and we are making this change to reflect higher printing and mailing costs. To get a listing in the Land And Farm Bulletin, simply let us know that you want to keep your listing at the new Enhanced level. Premium ads stay the same. And, check out our improved Bulk plans, just below this item.
Yes, we're also changing the Bulk plans, as well - we think it's going to work out better, and be much simpler in terms of value-for-money. Existing bulk plan customers: you are grandfathered at your existing price-level. Here's the new deal: Bulk plans will be sold in increments of 10, 20 or 30 Enhanced listings - see above item on pricing changes for Enhanced plan details.You can get 10 Enhanced for $99; 20 for $179; or 30 for $249.
Again, we love our grandfathers - don't we all? - and so everyone is grandfathered in at their existing plan. The new pricing and ad-counts are for new Bulk plan purchases only.
If you want to export wood, better get on board...
The American Tree Farm System (ATFS) has been endorsed by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification ( PEFC), an international, independent, non-profit organization that promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. Forest landowners who voluntarily commit the extra time and expense to produce wood sustainably under the ATFS system will now qualify for access to the international markets that they did not have before. This is the second such approval for the U.S., with the first being the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). About 10 percent of the global wood market currently comes through forest certification systems.
The Forest Landowners Association has said it is pleased with the PEFC endorsement. ATFS provides an efficient and cost effective program for private landowners to participate in the certified wood market. Because of the high cost of other certification programs, private landowners have mostly been unable to certify their wood, but they now have the option. For more information contact the FLA.

Many folks skip over the Pasture category because they don't have livestock or horses. Big mistake - this is a gem of our land-use categories, often with great bargains and the kind of land that everyone dreams of, but no one goes out and tries to find because they don't think it exists. Think again; pasture land is often under-utilized and can be transformed into many things, including cropland, hunting land or even a residential site.
Some pasture land is connected to working row-crop farms, some will be found double-pointed in our "ranch" category, and more will also be found in our "livestock" category. However, there are many pieces of land listed that offer pasture open to a variety of uses, and that come with a variety of histories. Many need not be used as they are being used now. Small towns, dairy farms, an historic courthouse, and a famous stone railroad viaduct are just some of the pleasures and treasures in this northeastern Keystone State shire. It's just to the northwest of the more famous Pocono Mountain region, and its sibling counties - Pike and Wayne to the southeast, and closer to New York City - are among the fastest-growing rural counties in the northeastern U.S.
But Susquehanna, far up its namesake river and bordering New York state is a world unto itself. Small hamlets dot the countryside - including maple trees tapped for increasingly valuable maple sap - such as Forest City, a lumber and coal-mining town once famous for the the number of churches serving immigrant miners, county seat Montrose, as well as New Milford. A building once used for Civil War soldiers' orphans still exists in Harford. The Starrucca Viaduct, near Lanesboro, is one of the oldest continuously used stone bridges in the U.S., a railroad bridge built in the mid-19th century and now on the National Register of Historic Places. Meanwhile, the annual blueberry festival keeps visitors coming. With nearly 45,000 people spread over 832 square miles, the county feels roomy.
The river itself snakes around the south, west and north sides of the county before dipping into its northeastern corner. Lots of properties are near water, however - whether stream, pond or lake. A mixutre of open land and homes are listed: A country home with a big porch is available in Montrose; woods and meadows await on 13 acres; a log home in New Milford offers country quiet; a country estate sits on 7-plus landscaped acres.
If you're feeling a chill, that's because in much of the country the weather is just starting to - or will soon - turn colder. And that means it might be time to fire up your fireplace...if you have one. If you don't, well, the number of properties that have fireplaces, wood-burning stoves, fire-pits, and other warming devices other than central or mechanical heating, is enormous. We don't have the space to show you more than a survey of those properties.

With costs of feed and storage rising, farm animals - pigs, horses, cows, and yes, llamas - are showing up in rural, and not-so-rural America. By the side of the road, behind barns, in parking lots. Meanwhile, in other news, the battle over what to do with neglected, abandoned and unwanted horses - from farms, race tracks, riding stables - continues.
Farm animals are showing up everywhere, said Annette Fisher of Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary in Ravenna, OH, according to Ohio.com and the Akron Beacon-Journal. The same story reports a pot-bellied pig and her piglets found abandoned, along with a llama running free along an Ohio state highway. Other stories of abandoned creatures have been strewn throughout the media, as fuel and food inflation continues, making the cost of care more expensive.
At the federal level, H.R. 6598 is being hotly debated on Capitol Hill; it would criminalize transport of horses, for purposes of slaughter. But a host of interest groups, including the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Quarter Horse Association, are opposing the bill; they say, without horse-processing, the inhumane treatment of the live creatures will only get worse. Horses now processed are euthanized under criteria set out by the Humane Slaughter Act.
