LF Search Tweaks Mean Better Sorts
"Search Properties" just got a whole lot better.
Here at HQ, we're always tinkering with search to give cherished customers a better sense of the amazing properties listed here - and to help you leverage the Internet's power. When customers struggle to find the properties they're looking for, or any properties that match their interests, that really concerns us, because we know it's all here: plantations, orchards, ranches, second-homes, timber and soybean fields, not to mention wind-farms and organic tracts, and historic properties, too. In the past year alone we've profiled properties with a mile of Pacific coastline (Stewarts Pt., CA) and a farm with free natural gas and a thriving antiques market business (Waterford, OH).
So, we've responded with some changes we're sure will ease the search process: when you obtain search results after clicking on "search properties," from the homepage toolbar, you can now sort by 'date edited,' 'date added,' 'county' and 'state.' That means you can see the newest (or oldest) properties for any particular state or county, and can drill down through one particular's state's or county's listings for a particular keyword or category, say, ducks, or timber, or waterfront. Use these new features today!
US Farms Net Way Up
Times may be tight at your dinner table, but the U.S. farm table is doing very well.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) says farms income rose to a record high in 2007 thanks to higher prices of produce in international markets, a federal report said in March. The USDA said that the net income of U.S. farms reached an aggregate $88.6 billion last year, compared to $59 billion in 2006. The previous record high was $85.9 billion in 2004. The strong performance was attributed to overall good crops and an increase in corn prices from strong demand for bioethanol. Sales of crop products climbed 20 percent to $143.2 billion and those of livestock products rose 18 percent to $141 billion. The department forecasted farm incomes will reach another record this year and gradually expand to the $100-billion mark in 2017.
Meanwhile the Administration agreed in March to a 33-day extension of the current Farm Bill in the hopes Congress will come around to its thinking on the topic, meaning "strengthening the existing safety net with a revenue-based counter-cyclical program and provides needed reforms. It has to target support to producers who need it the most, and it has to increase spending on vital programs such as nutrition, conservation, research on specialty crops, purchases of fruits and vegetables for our nutrition program, and importantly renewable energy. Funds for this spending must be made with offsets and not tax increases," Ag Secretary Ed Schaefer told reporters. Stay tuned...

Please, Oh Please, Map Your Property!
We see a lot of properties without a decent address or latitude/longitude reference. The result is devastating for a listing: when a customer clicks on the mapping link for this listing (if there even is one), no relevant map comes up. Nada. Zero. We just have to cringe. But in order to keep our ad prices low, we (sadly) cannot track down every seller to nudge them into correctly mapping their property for their listing. Remember, even if you don't have a street address or the latitude-longitude numbers for the property, our system will help you map it.
Here's how: without a valid address or lat/lon number, create the ad as you normally would. Put in the state, with or without the county designated (we prefer you list the county). Save this information, then go to "my properties." Find your ad, and click on the "edit property map" link; this will take you to a map within the listing's state. You'll see a lat/lon buffer above the map; it's taking its information location off the salmon-colored marker on the map. Click on the marker once, then move your cursor to where you think your property is located on the map, using zoom or the 'grab' function, and click on that area. The marker will move to where your cursor is located, right on your property. Now, below the map click on the "save property location," link. you'll be taken back to your property listing. Double-check the link by viewing your ad and clicking on the map link, which should appear in the property address area at the bottom of the ad.
Lesson: no matter if you have a valid property address or not, you can create a listing with a valid mapping link, so leads can find the property. Even if you know just the town or hamlet name - find that burg on the map, click on it, and save it as the property location. You'll be glad you did.
Land-Use Profile: Waterfront
Shimmering, glistening, splashing, cooling, enthralling...waterfront property has always been one of the most popular land-use categories here at LandAndFarm.com - it's also one of the largest recreational divisions we have, in terms of total listings. Who doesn't want a stocked river or stream running by, or through, their property, or a crystal-clear lake or pond for watering livestock, fishing, swimming or boating? What's amazing about some of the property we see listed is the size of the water elements: large rivers, like the Mohawk in New York, or the Missouri, running right along the property line. Major lakes out the front door. Even oceanfront property.
Examples of waterfront property abound. On lakes, 455 acres is selling on Norris Lake, TN, and 2.6 acres is available on Lake Russell, GA. On the ocean, Canada's New Brunswick province has 18 acres available. And on the other coast, 3-plus acres awaits in WA. Riverfront acreage is not uncommon: a large 2300-plus acre ranch on the Trinity River, TX offers privacy and hunting. Missouri's Eleven Point River features an even larger spread. Of creeks and ponds, there seems to be no end.
The " waterfront" category is accessible from the Land Use mini-link just under the toolbar on the homepage, or from the Land Use menu along the left-hand side of the homepage, about halfway down the page.
Trees: US vs. CAN, Sarawak vs. Loggers
High-ranking U.S. senators, Max Baucus (D-MT) and Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) are urging the White House to get tough on Canada over what they say is non-compliance with the 2006 Softwood Lumber Agreement both countries signed; the agreement is essentially an anti-dumping statute aimed at limiting lower-priced, subsidized Maple Leaf imports. The senators say Canadian feds are letting individual provinces continue to subsidize softwood exports to the U.S., making U.S. software more expensive by comparison, among other charges.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian province of Sarawak, on Borneo, is unveiling a high-tech program aimed at stopping illegal logging on the environmentally fragile southeast Asian island that it shares with Indonesia and Brunei. The system uses remote sensing, image processing, mobile mapping and web-based applications to detect illegal activities. The data is then sent to field officers via a web-based platform from which it will be downloaded to a mobile component such as a PDA. Officials there cautioned the new tools will need back-up from ground enforcement, e.g. more people, to work. Both Malaysia and Indonesia have been criticized for allowing a variety of environmentally-significant forests, covering thousands of square miles, to be logged. Borneo is the world's third-largest island.
Housing: Sales Up; Prices, Down; Firm May Help
Housing purchases rose slightly, while prices declined. However, experts cautioned the data do not indicate a housing market recovery.
Sales of existing homes in the U.S. unexpectedly rose in February for the first time in seven months. Purchases increased 2.9 percent to an annual rate of 5.03 million, the National Association of Realtors added. The median price of single-family homes dropped 8.7 percent from February 2007. Nigel Gault, chief U.S. economist at Global Insight Inc. in Lexington, Massachusetts, told Bloomberg News the activity was a "temporary pause," saying that price declines are spurring sales, but financing terms are "not on the good terms," that they once were.
The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) said seasonally adjusted mortgage loan applications for mid-March were down from earlier in March, while its index of refinancings also decreased. Meanwhile, a new firm, Private National Acceptance Corp., LLC, dubbed PennyMac, is stirring up a lot of discussion with its business model that aims to work out loans that homeowners have stopped making payments on or that are expected to fall into delinquency. It will focus on whole mortgages, or those that haven't been packaged into pools of debt known as residential- mortgage-backed securities.
County Profile: Cherokee County, OK
Oklahoma! Where the wind sweeps through green forests and leafy meadows?
Yes. Oklahoma is, technically, a Great Plains state, situated on the southern plains. But topography and climate don't pay attention to borders laid down by the U.S. government over a century ago. Cherokee is one of a handful of northeastern Sooner State counties in the heart of "Green Country," so-called because this portion of northeastern OK gets significantly more rainfall than the rest of the state. Here, the rural areas have a decidedly eastern and southern-eastern look to them - rolling hills, streams, woods, and even waterfalls, prove the point - and the look. Although some credit the state's highway officials with coining the term in the 1960s, "Green Country" has been in common use for many decades.
Cherokee is deep in the heart of the western Ozark Mountain foothills; its county seat, Tahlequah, is capital of the Native American Cherokee Nation, and home to Oklahoma's Northeastern State University. With historic Tahlequah as its anchor, Cherokee offers a bit of eastern charm in a state known more for rodeos, stockyards and ranches than antiques and academics. Although it can snow in Green Country, spring comes early to Cherokee, which owes its climate more to the mid-South than the Southern Plains.

| Old Vineyard Beguiles in New Mexico by LandAndFarm.com Staff
When people start talking about growing pistachios, wine grapes and almonds during the day and skiing the next, folks mostly think of California. But, they might just be talking about the Tularosa Basin, a fertile valley tucked into a quiet portion of south-central New Mexico.
Here, the eponymous village of Tularosa nestles peacefully among the groves, in the shadow of the Sacramento Mountains, which range up to nearly 12,000 feet. And, it's here that one of the first doctors in town built a classic American foursquare nearly a century ago, and where successions of owners have restored, maintained and expanded Mission and Symphony grape vines that cluster in neat rows on much of Dr. Champion's original seven-acre spread at the edge of town.
