Horses
Horses come in a variety of breeds, and a subset of the horse species-draft horses-also is divided into different breeds. From Arabian to Friesian, from Colorado Range to Paso Fino, the variety of horses worldwide is staggering. The Spanish explorers brought horses to the Western Hemisphere in the 16th century. Native Americans quickly adopted them, while the Spanish set up breeding stations to propagate their original convoy of animals.
Horses were the prime form of transportation for many years in North America. And, even after trains took over from stagecoaches, as the most popular form of inter-city transportation, horse-drawn trolleys remained on America's city streets until early in the 20th century. Horses were used as draft animals to pull plows, and also to pull grinding wheels for crushing corn and other grains. Today, most people know only of horses that race at tracks, such as Aqueduct in New York City or Santa Anita in Southern California.
